Breed a Partbred Andalusian

Beauty - Movement

- Versatility

The first Andalusian horses arrived in Australia in 1971. With their rarity at the time and the difficulties involved in buying and importing them the obvious avenue for many people to realise their dream of owning one of these wonderful horses was to breed partbreds. Often their favourite performance mare was put to foal. Some breeders embarked on a deliberate breeding programme to produce superior eventers or showjumpers, others to introduce the wonderful temperament of the Andalusian to their existing line of breeding. Many of our present breeders started their early days with the Partbred, and loved their qualities so much they moved on to the Purebred, or used the upgrading programme to produce Australian Andalusian.

Others were happy with the results they produced so they stayed with breeding partbreds and by 1975/76 they were starting to infiltrate the equestrian sporting scene and have continued to do so with great success. With selective breeding, superb quality can, and has been, attained. The variety of the partbred is large: the cross with large ponies to produce small superb horses for children; with Thoroughbreds, Anglo s and Warmbloods to produce eventers, show jumpers, hack or dressage horses; with Quarter Horses, Arabians, Stock Horses for campdrafters, sporting horses and harness horses- the list is endless and the results have been spectacular.

Partbred Andalusians have won hacks at Royal Shows, gone to the highest levels in dressage, been shortlisted for the Olympics in eventing, won campdrafts and have been successful showjumpers. They have also carried their loving owners safely and calmly on trail rides.

The Partbred breeding programme includes 1st Cross (Pure Spanish over a non-Andalusian mare), and 2nd Cross (1st cross mare put back to Pure Spanish or Australian). The next cross up (3rd Cross becomes an Australian Andalusian. The AHAA does not recognise any partbred males in their breeding programme and only provides Gelding classes at shows for partbred males over 2 years. No broken coloured

horses (Pinto, Paint and Appaloosa) are accepted into the Register, so care must be taken that the foundation mare is not one of these. Apart from that, there are no height or breed restrictions.

"Moonbah Rustino"

Rusty is a 2nd X Andalusian gelding bred by Simone and Doug Palfreyman. He is rising 4 (at the end of Feb 2003) stands approx 15.1hh at the moment, is a bright red/orange bay although he has no black points other than a darker brown mane and tail and his legs are in actual fact dark liver and chestnut, he also has darker tiger striping on the back of both forearms and a dorsal stripe.

Rusty is by Felspar Carlito out of Moon Maid (who was by Bizarro XI) (1X44 a Felspar horse, Anglo x Spanish. Rustinos Arab blood combine some of the most prestige's Arabian horses known in Australia to date) I am also currently working on having him registered with the Arabian Horse Society as they are looking at redefining the percentage of Arab blood in partbreds.

He is registered with the AHAA and ANSA so as we may compete further a field and more frequently.

Rustino recently returned from having three weeks with a renowned classical horse trainer and he is going extremely well showing all the Andalusian movement traits and composure (cool, calm and collected). Rustino is at the trainers at the moment and is going very well, as Rusty and myself both did all the ground work he is only needing to be backed. He will be trained in the classical principals of dressage and we will also compete to have fun.

This horse has a natural born attitude, ability and conformation to master the high school movements including Spanish walk, Levade, Capriole and even bowing. He is very easy to teach and learns very quickly but can also become board with out enough stimulation.

We have both put in the hours and hard work to get to the stage we re at now and a lot more hard work will definitely follow. As a result of dedication on both parts Rustino is a real eye catching horse, with well developed muscles and a can do attitude. Nothing fazes this gelding at all.

Our achievements are great and extremely rewarding for all the hard work. His highest achievement to date is being awarded 2002 National Junior Champion Part bred Gelding by Dona Saskia Mesdeg. And being highly awarded and praised by Dr Rod Ryan saying that Rustino was an absolute credit to me (which was a much appreciated pat on the back). He has a temperament unmatched by any other horse I own (although my Lipizzaner mares come awfully close).

ANDALUKA KARO

Andaluka Karo, known as Fred at home is our much adored white, 16hh first cross Andalusian gelding. He is by Manuka Montego, out of Leibchen and was born in 1987 at Andaluka Park in Torquay.

In March 2001, Mr. Ray Coles generously gave me free lease of Fred, so for the past 18 months I have considered myself part owner of Andaluka Karo. When offered Fred it was not necessary for me to go and sight him as I vividly remember him from 11 years ago. As a 16 girl at Riding Club I remember adoring the beautiful, almost white Andalusian that Anne Coles (nee Earl) was schooling as a four year old.

Fred is an absolute joy to ride, show and just generally be around. His is an entertainer at heart with cheeky quirks such as his very demanding love for carrots, his pick-pocket tendencies, the "horse talk" whinnies on our arrival, and his very persuasive, yet gently, use of body language to be tickled just where he likes it.

In competition Fred and I are mostly showing and he excels in Show Hunter classes. His greatest achievements so far include;

2001 Corio/Moorabool HS - Supreme Show Hunter Exhibit.

2001 Geelong/Dist HS - Supreme Show Hunter Exhibit

2002 Geelong./Dist HS - Supreme Show Hunter Exhibit

2002 Colac Horse Show - Champion Show Hunter Exhibit

His win at Colac this year qualifies him for the VASA Show Hunter Horse of the Year at Werribee in January 2003, which we are very excited about competing in.

Showing Fred in Andalusian classes has also been a wonderful new experience for me. We competed at Geelong Show in 2001 where he went Champion Ridden Andalusian and also at the Victorian Andalusian Champs in Jan. 2002 where we were very excited to be sashed Reserve Champion Ridden Partbred Andalusian. The champs were a real highlight for Fred as he just loves having an audience and this one was clapping...... at him! Applause does not bother this primadonna.

Fred and I also love to do dressage, jumping, games and our favourite pastime is a good long ride (including a nice big gallop) around the river tracks of Inverleigh.

I have been very lucky to have had many ponies and horses in my 25 years of riding but Fred, my partbred Andalusian, is the most loving, affectionate and (even if I do say so myself) handsome horse that I have ever had the pleasure of being best friends with.
